It's time to talk about the elephant in the room
There's a worrying trend that affects an alarming number of tech devices each year, and it's only getting worse with policies and technologies that make devices harder to use and repair as they age. Today we'll go over the stages of our devices and how they contribute to this growing problem, as well as what we can do to stop it!

This is why Right To Repair is so important. These huge companies love to green-wash their designs in ad speak to try and portray themselves as "caring for the environment"... but they also intentionally make them to be e-waste as quickly as they as they can possibly get away with- so you have to replace with new. This is true of laptops, phones, cars, vacuum cleaners, tvs, etc. MANY items get junked because a simple small part is broken and could have been easily fixed if the parts were available and the product not intentionally designed to be unrepairable (like unnecessarily gluing parts so you have to destroy a TV to take it apart). Louis Rossmann was right all along.

Repairability of game consoles isn't talked about enough I feel. Since the Xbox 360, Xbox optical drives have been serialised and paired to specific consoles, making replacement of a dead drive really tedious. The same was even true of the HDD in the original Xbox. Its such a shame as well because there's plenty of great games for old consoles but we might get to a point where the original hardware needed to play them is hard to find. Modding exists but we shouldn't have to resort to effectively running exploits in order to repair our machines.

Of course, the biggest issue of all is Apple refusing to unlock old devices that have been bought perfectly legitimately, meaning that perfectly good phones, computers and tablets end up as trash rather than being given that second lease of life at all. Some of what they're doing is borderline criminal.

Not most sold iPhone, not one of the most sold phones, the most sold Phone in Existence. The 2G's 270,000 Units sold versus the 6's 222.4 million Units sold just can't be compared in Price. I'm proud of the fact that I used a 2012 MPB all the way until she departed this earth due to an unforeseeable accident with shampoo in a luggage bag last month, and I just installed Big Sur and Kubuntu Linux on a 2013 MBP yesterday, which I am refurbishing myself (replacing the screen), and keeping it out of a landfill. My phone is now three generations old, and I have vowed to not upgrade until it dies too. That said, I'm really mad that starting in 2013, and through today, the only thing you can replace on any Apple laptop in the last 11 years is the SSD, if even that. I couldn't just buy any old 2013 Retina Mac, I had to pick one with 16GB of RAM already installed, because if I hope to squeak more than five years out of this thing, 8GB won't be enough, and it's f'ing soldered to the board. I love Apple products, but kinda hate Apple. Who TF is going to want an M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM in 2034? The CPU will be plenty fast for web browsing, but you know Chrome alone will require 16GB by then. You talk about these companies handling the exit of their devices better, and upgradability 100% helps, but they refuse to offer it anymore, and the only explanation for not having RAM slots (or even SSD slots anymore) is forced obsolescence, and they really need to be punished for that behavior.

Apple devices more supported, work longer and better than any tech I have ever owned! RUclipsrs are the MAIN drivers of e-waste. Every tech RUclipsr ask the ridiculous question “should you upgrade FROM LAST YEAR?”

What can we do? Buy less stuff. Buy kit that can be upgraded and repaired economically. In general, this is not Apple gear. Apple _will_ repair stuff before it's 'obsolete', but beyond a certain point they make it uneconomic. And they willfully make life difficult for repair shops and consumers who want to fix things themselves. Unfortunately people (myself included) like light and thin and fast, and it's clear they care about that a lot more than 'can I take it to bits and tinker with it?'. This is really why I'm so upset about Apple selling so many devices with soldered RAM and storage which is barely sufficient on the day of purchase. This is built in obsolescense by design - these will become obsolete many many years before a 16/512GB device...

3:22 iPhone 7 are still very usable but Apple killed them by not updating them. I care about them. In my opinion, Apple is not supporting OS updates of iPhone well enough (in contrary to most people’s believe). As most Android manufacturers are not updating their phones for long, app support continues well after OS update ended. iPhones have OS update longer, app support suffers. Microsoft in particular stops supporting iOS version that is just two major version behind the current (say when iOS 17 rolled around late last year, Microsoft dropped support for iOS 15). Software support on iPhones is just plain bad. Apple still supports A10(X) iPads for iOS 17, but Apple killed A10 iPhones (iPhone 7) on iOS 15, what gives? Apple killed iPhone 7. (The same goes for A9 and A11 iPhones) To let the devices live longer, Apple (and other manufacturers as well) need(s) to update them for as long as possible for both OS updates and app support. Apple should be updating iPhones as long as the performance of the chip allows. A chips are very powerful, but I find their potential untapped because of Apple’s arbitrary update cut-off. Apple also needs to mandate app support for at least 3 major iOS versions prior to the current one, say when iOS 19 rolls around, every app should still be supporting iOS 16 as they are today. Instead, Apple is charging absurd “core technology fee”, cutting off OS updates to stimulate sales, etc. Apple does not really care about the environment. Those are shows only. I am holding off buying Apple Silicon Macs because of their potentially limited lifespan. You might not be able to use MacOS Patcher on them when their official OS updates are finished.

If you take machines that are no longer useful to Apple Store and they will recycle them for free (which is fine for the purgatory between "old but still useful" and "collector's item.") But yeah, I'm kind of in packrat mode since I have the space. That way I'll still have the collector devices when they become collectable.

One of the big drivers for the rarity and price of older systems is the durability and longevity of the device. Good example: I am currently building up a stock of laptops by dredging eBay for old MacBook Pros and Powerbook G4s. I don’t tend to touch either model of the white plastic MacBooks because most are physically broken. I have a black one in good shape and I intend to keep hold of it. In contrast, the Pro level machines scratch and dent easily but it’s still pretty easy to find them in good shape if you know how to spot the problems. But in 10 years I guarantee finding a polycarbonate MacBook in good shape will be even harder than finding an Ice iBook G3 with a working GPU.

One of the worst e-waste periods is still yet to come, and that’s going to be related to the end of life of Windows 10 and all the devices that aren’t “officially” compatible with Windows 11. Many of these machines are technically perfectly capable of running Windows 11 just fine but as a way of pushing new PC sales during COVID, Microsoft increased the system requirements to require 8th gen Intel Core/2nd gem AMD Ryzen or later, so there’s a flood of Intel 6th and 7th gen devices on the used market that nobody wants. One of these is a machine I pulled out of my most recent e-waste pile at work, which is a Dell XPS 15 9560 which is configured with an i7-7700HQ, 32GB DDR4-2400, a GTX 1050 and a beautiful 4K touch panel. It’s a gorgeous laptop but has a broken screen hinge, so it was deemed “not worth fixing” due to it’s age. This machine does not qualify for Windows 11’s official system requirements despite the 7700HQ and 32GB of RAM being more than enough to run it just fine, so I grabbed it and once I get the time to fix the hinge and give it a new battery it’ll get a second lease on life. I’m also still running other older machines, my main desktop PC still uses a Ryzen 7 1700X & AMD X370 motherboard, and I have a home file server/NAS which uses an Intel H55 board and uses a first generation i7-870 which is 14 years old, yet runs my 8TB RAID array perfectly and will continue to do so for a long time. I always fall into the trap of thinking I need a new computer, and sometimes I do it, l currently use an M1 Pro MacBook Pro for my laptop, but why? What do I do that needs an M1 Pro? Not a lot honestly, mostly editing 1080p video. It’s nice, but I’m sure the 1700X in my desktop and 7700HQ in the rescued XPS 15 can handle it just with a bit more patience. I know the XPS will be fine because my sister uses the previous gen XPS 15 9550 with a 6700HQ perfectly well and has done since sometime in 2018 when she bought it.

I think it’s a cop-out to absolve consumers of any responsibility. The longer consumers keep using their products instead of buying new ones, the less e-waste there will be. Many people make completely unnecessary upgrades every few years. There are so many M1 Macs available for resale; how many of these people really need to upgrade from an M1 Mac?

I have a computer that I bought in 1977 and I still use it regularly. HP-67. HP made some great stuff way back when. I also use a 2010 iMac 27 on a regular basis. It makes a great television. It cost me $100. I'm typing this on a 2015 iMac 27 that I bought for $200; 32 GB of RAM and Apple Keyboard and mouse. The screen alone is worth the price and it's fine for office use. I have an iPhone 7+ on my desk that displays the weather and market indexes. And I do have an iPhone 5 and I use it regularly as a music player when I go running. My wife uses an iPod nano 1 for walking. It's still got a few hours of battery life. I have an iPad 2 in the living room as a digital clock and an iPad mini 2 at my desk for the same purpose.
